The Origins of Halloween
Halloween falls on October 31, the eve of the Christian feast of All Saints' Day (All Hallows). Its roots reach back roughly 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter — a night when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to thin. Bonfires and costumes were used to ward off wandering spirits, customs that merged over the centuries with Christian observances.
Irish and Scottish immigrants carried these traditions to North America in the 19th century, where they evolved into modern trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins (descended from carved turnips), and costume parties. The jack-o'-lantern even takes its name from an Irish folk tale about "Stingy Jack." Today Halloween is one of the most popular celebrations of the year. Because the date is fixed to October 31, only the weekday changes annually, so the countdown is simply a matter of the days remaining.
